ELMS: Educating Librarians in the Middle South Scholarships

UNT/ELMS Scholarships Available To 30 Students

The UNT/ELMS Scholarship Program will offer thirty $12,000 scholarships and related support to educate librarians living in Arkansas and Western Tennessee. Through funding from the Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program, sponsored by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, students will receive tuition scholarships to complete the University of North Texas master's program. The goal of this program is to educate a cohort of librarians to work in this region with 21st century skills in digital curation and librarianship, data management, medical information, electronic resources management, and other emerging technologies.

Information About Applying To The UNT/DLIS Master’s Degree Program

Students will be recruited to become members of an active cohort. The two Institutes will be held at the UNT/DLIS partner institution, the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) Library in Little Rock, for learning and socializing. The Institutes for the core courses and other workshops will be held in January and June 2014. UNT professors and the project team will join these students for these intensive learning sessions, which will enable the professors, teaching assistants, and students to meet, interact, and establish connections to one another prior to taking the web-based distance learning portions of the coursework. The remainder of the coursework will be completed through fully online or blended classes.

UNT/ELMS Scholarship Recipients Will Receive:

  • $12,000 Tuition Scholarships including fees for 30 students admitted to the 2014 UNT/DLIS master's degree program--ELMS Cohort
  • Students will complete a three course concentration in Health Information, Library Services in Diverse Settings, or Technology Integration and will earn a Graduate Academic Certificate in Digital Content Management
  • Specialized training in digital curation and preservation including webinars and face to face workshops given by recognized leaders in the field
  • Professional development workshops, library tours, and classes on information literacy and technology
  • A UNT librarian matched to each student for academic support and professional mentoring
  • State Chapter and American Library Association annual membership dues

UNT/ELMS Scholarship Eligibility

Applicants for the ELMS scholarship must be residents of Arkansas or Middle and Western Tennesee (including all locations west of the Nashville-Davidson–Murfreesboro–Franklin Metropolitan area and/or Interstate 65). The scholarships will also focus on recruiting students from under-represented populations in librarianship and from residents of rural areas in Arkansas or Tennessee. Applicants for the scholarship must also be admitted to the UNT Toulouse School of Graduate Studies and the Department of Library and Information Sciences.

The scholarship application and all supporting documents must be postmarked by November 10, 2013.

Information about applying to the UNT/DLIS Master’s Degree Program

To be eligible for consideration for the UNT/ELMS scholarship, applicants must apply and be admitted to the University of North Texas Toulouse School of Graduate Studies and the master's program in the UNT/DLIS. Submit all application materials by November 1, 2013.

Information on the master's program and application process are located at http://lis.unt.edu/admissions-and-advising. To be considered for admission the following materials must be submitted:

Step One:

  • An application to the Toulouse School of Graduate Studies at http://www.tsgs.unt.edu/admissions
  • Official transcripts of your complete scholastic record
  • Official scores for the Graduate Record Examination or the Miller's Analogy Test
  • A $75.00 application fee

Step Two:

  • An application to the UNT/DLIS program
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • A personal statement of your purpose and goals
  • A resume of both your academic and professional careers
